What to Do Before Ear Wax Removal: Simple tips for a smooth process

Ear wax removal might not be the most glamorous task, but it can be essential for comfort and hearing health. Doing a little preparation before the day can make the process easier and safer.

Ear wax (cerumen) naturally protects your ears, but when it builds up too much, it can cause symptoms like fullness, reduced hearing, or even ringing. Preparing your ears properly before removal helps soften the wax, making it easier to remove and reducing the risk of irritation or injury.

Steps to Take Before Ear Wax Removal

  1. Soften the Wax

    • Using olive oil can help soften the wax and make it easier to remove both for yourself and our audiologist.  We recommend Earol olive oil spray twice a day before your appointment.

    • Sodium bicarbonate is quite strong at breaking down wax but we only recommend using it for a few days for tough dry impacted wax only, as using it for too many days tends to create ear sores.

    • If you have had any recent ear infections or recent history of being told you have a perforated (hole in the ear) eardrum you should NOT use any drops.

  2. Avoid Inserting Objects in Your Ear

    • Don’t use cotton swabs, hairpins, or other tools. These can push wax deeper or injure your ear canal.

    • Leave any actual removal to a professional.

  3. Stay Upright After Drops

    • After applying drops or oil, keep your head tilted for a few minutes so the liquid can penetrate the wax.

  4. Hydrate and Relax

    • Staying hydrated can help keep ear wax naturally soft.

    • If you’re going to a clinic, being relaxed can make the removal process removal easier and more comfortable.

  5. Know When to See a Professional

    • If you have ear pain, discharge, dizziness, or a history of ear problems, it’s best to let a professional handle it.

    • Never attempt self-removal if you have a perforated eardrum or ear tubes.

Preparing properly before ear wax removal can make a big difference in how effective and safe the process is. Take a gentle approach, use softening agents, and when in doubt - ask a professional.

Your ears do a lot for you. A little care goes a long way in keeping them clear and healthy.
